Sunday we observe and celebrate the ascension of Jesus! Moments prior to Jesus being ascended into heaven Jesus tells the disciples what they were going to be… (Acts 1:8) “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” We have the picture of the disciples standing open mouthed and wide eyed as Jesus slowly disappeared into the clouds. Then almost without time to blink, the disciples were informed by two men dressed in white that “this same Jesus” would return just as He was taken. So here it is over 2000 years later, we are still waiting, but the church has been very busy. We have been going into the uttermost parts of the earth! Waiting does not mean inaction. Waiting sets the proper context of action in anticipation. The entire Bible (with the exception of prior to the fall of Adam) is written in the context of waiting…waiting for God’s plan of redemption to be fully realized. We are part of this grand plan, the church is the body of Jesus in the world today, active, engaged, intentional.
